Camping chairs
Which camping chair suits you depends mostly on how it travels and how you sit. If you carry it, weight and packed size matter most; if it comes out of the car boot, seat height, padding and maximum load matter more. Below: what to check, then 8 chairs compared on what their own listings say.
What to look for
- Weight
- Listings give the chair's own weight. The lightest here are 1.1 to 1.4 kg; padded, reclining and oversized chairs run from 3.5 kg to about 6 kg. If you will carry it any distance, compare this first.
- Seat height
- How far the seat is above the ground. A standard folding chair is around 45 cm (the Trail Kestrel lists 45 cm); a low chair like the SUNNYFEEL lists 19 cm, for sitting behind a windbreak with your legs stretched out. Many listings do not give it, and the overall height does not tell you.
- Packed size
- The size in its bag. Pole-and-fabric chairs fold small (the OneTigris Tigerblade lists 33 × 15 × 13 cm, the HomlyPro 35 × 12 × 10 cm); one-piece folding chairs pack long and thin, 90 to 98 cm on this list, so measure the boot or the locker first.
- Maximum load
- The weight the maker says the chair supports. Here it runs from 100 kg to 204 kg (450 lb), highest on the oversized and heavy-duty chairs. If a listing does not give it, ask the seller before you buy.
- Back and recline
- A high back, padding and recline make the difference for a long evening outside. Two chairs here recline: the Outsider through 3 positions to 135°, and the Overmont through 4 positions from 100° to 150° with a removable footrest. Both weigh around 4.7 to 4.9 kg.
- Feet
- On sand or soft grass, wide feet stop a chair sinking. The Naturehike YL05 lists anti-sink feet and the HomlyPro wide anti-slip feet.
