Camping stoves
Choose a stove by the gas it takes first, then by how you cook. Below: what to check, then 7 stoves in three groups, compared on what their own listings say.
What to look for
- Fuel and fitting
- Check which gas a stove takes before you buy: cartridges come with different fittings that do not swap, and some stoves run from a gas bottle through a hose and regulator. The backpacking stoves here take EN 417 threaded cartridges, the Campingaz takes Campingaz C206 pierceable cartridges, and the Green Haven runs from a bottle and needs a hose and regulator, sold separately.
- Power
- Listings give power per burner in W or kW: from 1,230 W to 4.0 kW on this page. Not every listing gives it.
- Wind
- Outdoors, wind steals heat. The Vango has a built-in windshield, the Campingaz a raised edge round the flame, and the Runa a lid that doubles as a windbreak.
- Lighting it
- Four stoves here list piezo ignition, which lights the burner without matches. Carry matches or a lighter as well.
- Weight
- The backpacking stoves weigh 73 to 100 g without gas. Most tabletop listings do not give a weight.
- Cook outside
- Never cook inside a tent or awning: burning gas makes carbon monoxide.
