Sleeping bags

A sleeping bag's ratings tell you more than its name. Below: what the comfort, limit and extreme figures mean, then 8 bags in four groups, compared on what their own listings say.

What to look for

Comfort, limit and extreme
Under the EN ISO 23537 test standard, comfort is the lowest temperature at which a standard adult woman sleeps comfortably in a relaxed position; limit is the lowest for a standard adult man curled up; extreme is a survival figure with a risk of hypothermia, not a temperature to plan for. Choose by comfort or limit.
"4-season" in a title is not a rating
Listing titles use season counts freely. One bag on this page has "4 Season" in its title but lists a comfort range of 7 to 16 °C. Compare the comfort and limit figures instead.
How the figures were measured
Only the Andes Nevado listing says its ratings were tested to EN ISO 23537. The others give figures without saying how they were measured, and some give only a comfort range or an extreme figure. We show exactly what each listing says.
Shape
Mummy bags taper to the feet, so there is less air inside to warm; rectangular and envelope bags are roomier and most open out into a blanket.
Weight and packed size
The two lightweight bags here are 700 to 730 g; the colder-night synthetic bags are about 2 kg; the doubles are larger again (2.6 kg where listed). Check the packed size if you carry it.
Liners
A liner adds a washable layer inside the bag and keeps it clean. The two here are 128 g and 0.54 kg; neither listing gives a warmth figure.

Listed cheapest first by the price when we put the list together. Each line says why it is here, using the maker's own listing. We have not tested these products.
