Camping beds

Somewhere comfortable to sleep: a raised camp bed, an airbed or a self-inflating mat. Below: what to check first, then ten compared on what their own Amazon listings say. We have not tested any of them.

What to look for

Camp bed, airbed or mat
A camp bed is a folding frame on legs that keeps you off the ground. An airbed is a blow-up mattress. A self-inflating mat is foam inside an airtight cover that draws in air when you open its valve. The mats here pack smallest; the beds pack biggest.
Size against your tent
Check the length, width and height against your tent's inner and its doorway. The camp beds here stand 36 cm to 51 cm high, and the raised double airbeds 46 cm.
Maximum load
Camp beds and airbeds list a maximum weight. On a double it has to cover both of you. The beds and airbeds below give 130 kg to 300 kg.
Weight and packed size
If you carry it far from the car, check the weight: from 1.6 kg for a single mat to 8.4 kg for a camp bed on this page. Each card's listing gives its packed size too.
How an airbed is pumped up
Some airbeds have a built-in electric pump, some come with a separate USB pump. An electric pump needs power, so check what it plugs into before you go.
Mats: thickness
Mat listings give a thickness rather than a maximum load, so that is what we show for mats. The mats here are 5 cm and 7.5 cm thick.
