Camping hammocks
Sleeping in a hammock takes three things: the hammock, a tarp over it and something warm underneath. Below: what to check, then 7 picks in three groups, compared on what their own listings say.
What to look for
- Size and load
- Listings give the hammock's length, width and maximum load: 260 to 290 cm long and 200 kg to 440 lb (about 200 kg) here.
- Insect net and rain fly
- All three hammocks here have a mosquito net. Only the OTraki comes with its own rain fly; for the others, add a tarp.
- Tarp waterproofing
- Tarps list a waterproof figure in mm: the Azarxis lists 2,000 mm and the OTraki's fly 1,500 mm, where a higher figure resists heavier rain. The Muross listing gives no figure.
- Warmth underneath
- In a hammock your sleeping bag is squashed flat underneath you, so it loses its warmth there; an underquilt hangs below the hammock instead. Both here list a temperature range of 5 to 20 °C.
- Trees and straps
- Every hammock here comes with tree straps. Check the campsite allows hammocks before you hang one.
