Camping essentials checklist

What to pack for a camping trip, whatever you sleep in. Start with the essentials for every camper, then add the short list for how you camp. Tick things off as you pack: nothing is saved, so print the page if you want to keep it.

Gas, barbecues and carbon monoxide

Never take a gas stove, gas light or heater, or a lit or smouldering barbecue, into a tent: carbon monoxide can build up to levels that kill in enclosed spaces, including awnings.[1] The same goes for a caravan, unless the stove, light or heater is a permanent fixture, installed and maintained correctly, and a caravan should have an audible carbon monoxide alarm.[1]
